Do I need Fusion 360 AND VCarve? What software does a CNC actually require?

The three-stage pipeline (the mental model beginners lack)
- CAD: draw the design
- CAM: turn it into toolpaths and G-code
- Sender/control: the program (or controller) that runs the G-code on the machine (gSender, UGS, Carbide Motion, Mach, or the machine's own screen; see the control-software entry)
VCarve and Aspire do stages 1 AND 2 in one app. The sender usually comes with your machine. That's the whole stack.
So: Fusion AND VCarve?
No. For signs, flags, trays, joinery, 2.5D carving, and machining purchased 3D models (the entire hobby-woodworking mainstream), VCarve alone is the complete design-to-G-code answer, and it's the overwhelming forum consensus for wood hobbyists. Fusion 360 earns its place only for from-scratch mechanical/parametric 3D design, aluminum parts, and engineering-style work. Some people run both (Fusion to design a mechanism, VCarve to make a sign), but almost no beginner needs both on day one.
What ships free with machines
Some machines bundle basic CAD/CAM (Carbide Create with Carbide3D, Easel with X-Carve). These are fine for first cuts, and many owners outgrow them into VCarve. Most hobby machines bundle only the sender.
Buying advice
- Machine ≤ 24"×24" working area → VCarve Desktop now (it includes rotary support); upgrade to Pro later for only the price difference (see the Desktop-vs-Pro and upgrade entries).
- Want to create your own 3D models → that's Aspire territory (see the VCarve-vs-Aspire entry).
- Try before buying: the free trial is fully functional except for saving toolpaths, some export functions and using gadgets, and you can only cut the supplied trial projects. The official pages state no time limit, but check the current terms on the trial page (see the trial entry).
