Does the Laser Module work with VCarve Desktop and Pro, or only Aspire? (And what is Laser Sketch Engraving?)

The answer

The Laser Module is an add-on compatible with Cut2D, VCarve (Desktop AND Pro), and Aspire, any version 11 or newer. It is not edition-gated like gadgets or rotary: the smaller-edition users get the same laser toolpaths as Aspire owners.

The module adds three toolpath types:

  • Laser Cut and Fill: cutting through material and hatch-filling areas
  • Laser Picture: photo engraving, with a Dither Image option for materials that only burn in two tones
  • Laser Sketch Engraving (new in 12.5): applies the sketch carving technique to a laser toolpath, picking out the key details of an image or model for a stylized engraving without lasering the whole image

Plus the post-processor support to run a laser head on your CNC (power mapped to the controller's power or spindle speed command).

Note: 12.5 also added a separate 3D Sketch Carving Preview for sketch carving (V-bit) toolpaths. That preview is a different feature from Laser Sketch Engraving.

Requirements

  1. A laser attachment on your CNC whose controller supports power control. The module drives the laser through your existing motion system
  2. A laser-capable post-processor. The official guide uses the standard GRBL post-processor as its example, and documents how to adapt one for your controller ("Adapting a post-processor for Lasers"). Older post-processors do not work correctly with the module
  3. The module is a separate purchase, licensed like the main program, and activated with Help > Enter License Code
