How do I change the name or date on a finished 3D model, like a purchased sign with the wrong text?

Updated Oct 13, 20262 min readAspire only

Two situations, two methods

Text sits on a FLAT area of the model

  1. Erase the old text: draw a closed vector around the text area and use Clear Component Inside Selected Vectors to flatten it, or set a small flat patch component over it (Merge High) at the surrounding surface height.
  2. Add new text: draw the text vectors, then either create a new text component (Merge) or simply V-Carve the new text with Start Depth matched to that surface level.

Text sits on a CURVED surface (ribbons, banners, domed areas): the hard case

Clearing leaves a flat crater in a curved surface, so it is the wrong tool. Instead:

  1. Sculpt the old text away: use Aspire's Sculpting tools. Deposit fills engraved text and Remove knocks down raised text, then run Smooth passes until the surface flows continuously again. Work zoomed in, at light strength, with many passes.
  2. Apply the new text with a projected toolpath: draw the text vectors positioned over the area, then run a V-Carve toolpath with "Project toolpath onto 3D model" checked. The carving follows the curved surface at consistent depth. (This projection step is available in VCarve Pro too.)

Before you start

  • Duplicate the component or Increment and Save first. Sculpting is one-way (see the versioning entry).
  • Check that the vendor's license allows modification or personalization if it is purchased art.
  • If the file exists as the seller's editable .crv3d WITH separate text components, just hide or delete that component and add yours. Only merged or baked models need the sculpting route.

Pro tips

  • Match the new font to the model's era and style (see the font entries). A font-identifier tool on a photo of the original helps.
  • Test the projected V-carve depth on the preview's curved area. Projection keeps depth consistent, but very steep zones distort letterforms, so place text on the gentler curvature.
