How do I check which version and build I have, and how do I install the latest patch?

Where the version lives

Everything about versions sits in the Help menu:

  • Help > About shows the version of the software, who it is licensed to and the type of license. The official FAQ gives this as the way to find your version.
  • Help > Check for Updates checks over the internet whether an update is available.
  • Help > What's New summarizes features added in major and minor updates.
  • Help > Release Notes lists the fixes and small enhancements in each patch.
  • Help > Migrate From Older Version copies settings from the last version into the new one after a version change.

Steps to get current

  1. Open Help > About and write down the full number (for example 12.511, not just 12.5).
  2. Choose Help > Check for Updates and follow the prompt if a newer build is offered.
  3. If the computer is offline or the check fails, go to the official Program Updates page on another device, pick your product and download the patch on the 12.5 row.
  4. Run the patch, restart the software, and confirm the new build in Help > About.
  5. Open Help > Release Notes to see what changed.

The rule that trips people up

The Program Updates page states that a patch only installs if you have already upgraded to that version in your V&Co account. A 12.5 patch will not turn version 11.5 into 12.5. If your account still shows an older version, the full installer for the version you own is in the account, and upgrade options are listed there too.

Pro tips

  • A patch does not refresh everything. The release notes for 12.504 and 12.507 say the local video tutorial browser only updates with a full install downloaded from your account.
  • A patch within 12.5 keeps your tools and settings in place. Moving from one version to another is when the migration dialog matters. See the entry on bringing tools and settings over after an upgrade.
  • Build 12.508 changed the file format. See the entry on 12.508 compatibility before patching only one of several computers.
