How do I machine an imported STL in VCarve Pro: the 3D Rough and 3D Finish workflow?

The workflow
- Import: Model > Import Component / 3D Model, then choose the STL or V3M. Set orientation (which face is up), size, and depth in material: how proud of the surface the relief sits, and any base thickness.
- Check the composite model in the 3D view, and position it in the 2D view relative to your vectors.
- 3D Roughing Toolpath: clears bulk material in terraces. Typical starting point: a 1/4" end mill or ballnose, Z Level strategy, and a machining allowance of about 0.02 to 0.03" left for finishing (shop advice, test on scrap).
- 3D Finishing Toolpath: the surface pass. Use a ballnose (straight or tapered), stepover of 8 to 12% of diameter (the official typical range) for a sandable finish, and a raster angle along the dominant detail direction.
- Boundary: set the Machining Limit Boundary to Model Boundary or a selected vector so the toolpaths don't waste time on empty blank (see the finish-boundary entry).
- Cutout: a profile toolpath around the model silhouette (Create Vector Boundary makes the vector) with tabs.
- Preview everything, then save with your post-processor.
Pro tips
- Two finish passes at 90° raster angles can noticeably improve detailed models, at double the time.
- If the imported model looks pixelated, the job's Modeling Resolution was probably too low at Job Setup. Restart the job at a higher resolution before investing toolpath time.
- Purchased V3M clipart in the software maker's own format imports cleanly and without the third-party-model limit.
