How do I make a cutting board end-to-end: juice groove, handles, engraving, and finish?

The build

1. Stock: hard maple, walnut, or cherry (closed-grain hardwoods; never open-grain oak for cutting faces, never softwoods). Buy a glued panel or glue your own, and flatten both faces on the machine if it isn't dead flat (see the slab-flattening entry), because a cutting board's flatness is half its quality feel.

2. Job Setup: measure REAL thickness; XY datum consistent with your zeroing plan; Z on material top. Use tape + CA workholding (full-face operations, so no clamps in the way; see the workholding entry).

3. Design (typical elements):

  • Board outline: rounded rectangle or shaped (paddle/state shape)
  • Juice groove: offset the outline inward ~3/4", then Profile ON that vector with a 1/4" ballnose, depth ~1/4", multiple passes. Use a ramped entry, and check the groove vector doesn't collide with engraving.
  • Handle grips (optional): underside finger pockets, using a Pocket toolpath with a large ballnose or core-box shape, or a roundover form bit profile pass. This makes it a two-sided job (see the two-sided entries): cut the underside features first, flip, then do the show face.
  • Engraving: monogram/design v-carved on the DISPLAY face. Remember the cutting-face rule (see the food-safe entry): engrave the side that won't meet the knife.

4. Toolpath order: (underside features → flip) → surface skim → v-carve engraving → juice groove → Profile cutout (tabs, or tape + CA holds it without tabs if coverage is good).

5. Shaping the edge: roundover on the router table afterwards (fastest), or a form-bit profile pass on the machine.

6. Finish: sand 120 to 220, raise the grain (damp wipe, dry, re-sand), mineral oil until saturated, board butter. Full recipe in the food-safe entry.

Pro tips

  • Engraving depth on boards: shallow (0.05 to 0.08") reads elegant and holds less gunk than deep carves.
  • Batch tip: one file, Array Copy of the whole design set, cut a 4-board panel per session.
  • Include a care card with every board you gift or sell (hand wash, re-oil). It protects your reputation, not just the board.
