How does the built-in Job Templates feature work: Save As Template and .crvt/.crv3dt files?

What Job Templates are
Job Templates are a dedicated feature for storing frequently used job dimensions, machine settings, and optionally geometry in a special template file: .crvt (VCarve) or .crv3dt (Aspire/3D). They behave like normal job files with one key difference: opening a template and saving never overwrites the template itself. The save acts as a brand-new file. That removes the classic mistake of clobbering your master file, which is the risk of the DIY approach described in the entry on making template files for jobs you run over and over and copying work between files.
Creating a template
- Set up a job the way you always want it: dimensions, datum, machine configuration, and any standing geometry (fixture outlines, hold-down zones, title blocks).
- Choose File ► Save As Template.
Templates land in their own shared location by default, a Templates folder inside the software's Files folder in Public Documents (for example C:\Users\Public\Documents\...\Templates\). That save and load location is shared only across templates, keeping them separate from day-to-day jobs.
Using a template
- From the Start panel: New file from template.
- Or File ► New file from template.
Either way you get a fresh untitled job pre-loaded with the template's setup.
Editing a template
Open it normally, make changes, then File ► Save As Template again and overwrite the original file.
Job Templates vs. toolpath templates
Job Templates capture the job setup and design side. Reusable machining strategies are a separate system. See the entry on how Toolpath Templates and the Vector Selector work in VCarve Pro & Aspire for automation and reusable workflows. The two combine well: a job template for the blank plus a loaded toolpath template gets a repeat product to G-code in minutes.
Pro tips
- Make one template per machine and material combination you run regularly.
- Include layer structure in the template. Named layers plus toolpath templates using those layers is near-automation.
