I upgraded to a new version - how do I bring my tools, post-processors, and settings over? (Migration Dialog)

Updated Oct 13, 20262 min readVCarve Pro & Aspire

What it is

When you install a new version alongside an older one, the Migration Dialog offers to carry your working environment forward so you do not start from scratch. It presents a set of checkboxes. Tick what you want and let it copy the data into the new version. If you skipped it at first launch, you can open it again from Help > Migrate From Older Version.

What each option migrates

  • Copy Machine / Tool Database: your tools, machines and their associated post-processors. Afterwards, verify the result in the Tool Database and Machine Configuration dialogs.
  • Backup Tool Database Online: backs up the freshly migrated tool database to your online (V&Co) backup area for the new version, so a cloud copy exists immediately.
  • My Post Processors: copies posts from your My_PostP folder only. Stock posts ship with the new version anyway. POST_BASE has not been supported since V11.0, so a custom post that used POST_BASE inheritance needs manual rework. See the post-processor editing entry.
  • Options: copies most of the options from the Options dialog (Edit > Options).
  • Custom Material Textures: textures you added for job setup and toolpath simulation.
  • Sculpting Presets: Aspire only, for the sculpting tools.
  • Use Legacy 3D View Control: keeps the V11.5-and-earlier mouse behavior in the 3D view instead of the V12 navigation. Choosing it disables some newer 3D view features, but it is not permanent. Change it later under Edit > Options, View Controls Mode.

What it does not cover

The dialog's option list does not include gadgets. Third-party or custom gadgets you installed need to be reinstalled or copied into the new version's gadgets folder manually.

Pro tips

  • Run the migration before deleting the old version, since it reads from the old installation's data.
  • If you skipped the dialog at first launch, open Help > Migrate From Older Version. Your tool database can also be recovered from the online backup; see the tool database backup and restore entry.
  • Spot-check one familiar tool's feeds and one machine's post association before your first real cut in the new version.
