My batch of signs drifts off center toward the far end of the table. How do I lay out a grid of blanks so every one comes out centered?

Why it happens
When pre-cut blanks are butted together on the table, tiny size errors add up. If the software thinks each blank is 5.50 inches tall and the real ones are slightly larger, the first row is fine and each row after it is off by a little more. By the last row the design has visibly drifted.
The fix: measure the stack, not one blank
- Cut all blanks to the same exact size. The method depends on them being identical.
- Push the blanks together on the table in the grid you will run.
- Measure the total height of the whole stack of rows.
- Divide that total by the number of rows. Use the result as the blank size in the software, in place of the nominal size.
- Do the same across the columns if you run more than one.
- Build the grid from that measured size (Array Copy for the vectors, or the Array Copy Toolpath), with one design centered in each cell.
Because the spacing now equals the real average blank, the error cannot accumulate across the table.
Keep the blanks square to the machine
- Register the grid against a physical fence. Educators describe a fence as more repeatable and less error-prone than typed offsets.
- If parts come out consistently skewed, the fence may not match the machine's actual travel. Cutting the fence edge with the CNC itself lines it up with the axes.
Array gotchas reported by educators
- The toolpath array and the vector array do not look the same on screen, because the toolpath array accounts for the tool diameter and the vector array does not.
- An "array copy not supported" message when saving goes away if the toolpaths are saved as one file instead of multiple files.
- To go back from an arrayed toolpath to the single original, right-click the array copy toolpath and choose Ungroup.
Pro tips
- Save the layout as a template with the text on its own layer so the next batch only needs new names.
- See the entries on the Array Copy Toolpath and on job templates.
