The software crashed and now my file won't open (error Code 3). Can I recover it?

Why this happens

Per user forum reports, Code 3 usually means the file is truncated: the write never finished. Common causes:

  • Killing the app with the red X while a save was still flushing to disk
  • A crash mid-save
  • Cloud-sync interference. Google Drive in particular is reported to mishandle large .crv3d files by locking/syncing them during the write

Recovery of a truncated file is unlikely, because the data simply isn't there. Prevention is the real fix.

Prevention habits

  1. Exit via File > Exit, not the red X, so pending writes can finish.
  2. Save versioned filenames as you work (sign_01, sign_02, sign_03…). A corrupt latest version costs you one increment, not the project.
  3. Work on a local disk, not inside a sync folder. Save locally, then copy to Drive/Dropbox/OneDrive afterwards.

After a crash

  • When the software crashes, it first tries to save your project alongside your original (so the original is not overwritten). Look for the extra file in the same folder before assuming loss.
  • A dialog then asks you to upload the crash information. Add any detail you can about what you were doing, because it helps the software maker track down and fix the issue.

Pro tips

  • Frequent crashes during heavy 3D modeling usually trace to RAM pressure at very high resolutions. See the performance entry.
  • An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) on the computer is cheap insurance against power-blip truncation.
