What are the major new features in Aspire 12 and that users should know about?

Overview

Aspire 12 and 12.5 were major updates that introduced substantial new features. If you’re upgrading from an older version or just started with 12.x, this covers the key additions that change how you work. Version 12.5 builds on 12.0, and its minor updates (12.0 to 12.5) are free.

Aspire 12.0: Major New Features

Brand New Interface

The UI was modernized with better DPI scaling (sharper on high-resolution screens) and a new theme. Vector and component tools are combined into one panel so there’s no more switching tabs between 2D and 3D work. New controls include a Components dropdown on the document toolbar, a Sheet dropdown, a 3D View Control, a View Toolbar, and an Orthographic view mode.

Drawing Directly in the 3D View

The drawing tools are available in the 3D view, and vectors can be shown in the 3D view, which is useful for checking how geometry lines up with the model and for debugging toolpaths.

Sketch Carving Toolpath

A new toolpath that takes a photo or a 3D model and creates a V-Carve toolpath that picks out the key parts of the source imagery. The results are quicker to machine than a full 3D toolpath and produce stylistic engraved results with little extra work. Good for portrait-style work without the time cost of 3D finishing passes.

VCarve Inlay Toolpath

A dedicated V-Carve Inlay toolpath that makes the process simpler and less error prone. It creates both the pocket (female) and plug (male) toolpaths, mirrors the geometry, and even puts the toolpaths on the right sheets.

Keep-Out Zones

Designate areas of your workbed the machine should avoid during rapid moves, such as places where clamps, jigs, and fixtures could interfere with safe running.

Four New 3D Shape Tools

The previous 3D shape creator was replaced with four new tools, each with interactive handles in the 3D view. The shapes remember how they were created, so you can come back and tweak them:

  • Create Angled Shape
  • Create Rounded Shape
  • Create Smooth Shape
  • Create Flat Plane

3D Cross-Section Tool

Create vectors from any part of your 3D model by clicking between two points. The cross-section vector is added to your drawing.

Sheet Management Improvements

  • Switch between sheets via a dropdown on the document toolbar
  • Add new sheets directly from the dropdown

Unified Import

Vector and bitmap import for 2D content are merged into a single import button rather than separate import paths.

Aspire 12.5: Additional Features

Vector Editing and Text in the 3D View

Building on the 12.0 drawing tools, the full suite of vector node editing tools is now available in the 3D view, along with text creation, the Fillet tool, and the Trim tool.

Acceleration-Aware Time Estimation

Machining time estimates now factor in your machine’s actual acceleration characteristics, so times are more precise than before.

Sheet-Specific Toolpaths and Transfer Between Sheets

Toolpath groups stay connected to their sheets, and you can relocate toolpaths between sheets or sides with a right-click. This helps in multi-sheet projects.

Smart Part Selection

Select all vectors internal to a selected boundary using the right-click context menu in both the 2D and 3D views, so you can select complete parts without grouping them first.

Edit Dimension Objects

Dimension objects can be edited by dragging control points to adjust anchor points, offsets, caption size, text, and position.

Preview Surface Colour

When previewing toolpaths you can specify a separate surface color for the material block, to better visualize colored or laminated surfaces.

3D Sketch Carving Preview

Preview Sketch Carving toolpaths in the 3D view before machining.

Laser Sketch Engraving (requires Laser Module)

Apply sketch carving techniques with laser tools for detailed surface treatments.

Optimized Pocketing for Fewer Retracts

Instead of retracting between all passes, the pocket toolpath proceeds to the next pass depth where it can, which gives smoother, faster pocketing with fewer retracts.

Snap Grid and Guide Lines in the 3D View

The snapping grid and guide lines are now visible in the 3D view, and you can set a custom color and thickness for them.

Layers and Sheets

Duplicate Layers, drag and drop layer ordering, layer filtering (hide empty layers), and Duplicate Sheet with all contents.

Other additions

Visual Toolpath Status in the toolpath tree, tool-inclusive naming, Peck Drilling Visualization, Flexible Nesting Options, Enhanced Plate Production, WebP image import, and a Rotary Import Orientation gizmo.

Key Things That Changed for Existing Users

  • Interface reorganized: Vector and 3D component tools are on one panel. Takes a short adjustment period if upgrading from older versions.
  • VCarve Inlay is now built-in: The automated toolpath is faster and less error-prone than building inlays by hand.
  • 3D view is now a first-class work environment: Older workflows required bouncing between 2D and 3D. Much less necessary now.
  • Machining time estimates are different: More accurate estimates due to acceleration modeling. Times shown may differ from what you were used to seeing.

Upgrading

  • Minor updates (12.0 to 12.5) are always free.
  • A major version released within 12 months of your purchase is free. Check your license details in your V&Co account.
  • Upgrading from VCarve Pro to Aspire: you pay the difference in price.
  • Check current upgrade pricing on the official purchase page; it is not listed here.
