What is the complete workflow for creating a CNC-ready decorative plaque in Aspire using multiple Modeling Tools together?

Updated Oct 13, 20265 min readAspire only

Overview

This entry shows an integrated workflow that uses several modeling tools in sequence to produce a finished decorative plaque. Real projects rarely use just one tool. They combine Create Shape, Two Rail Sweep, Turn and Spin, Create Texture Area, Create Vector Boundary, Smooth Components, Sculpting and Scale Model Height. The order of the tools matters as much as knowing what each one does. Most of these tools (Create Shape, Two Rail Sweep, Turn and Spin, Create Texture Area, Sculpting) are Aspire only, so this workflow is for Aspire. The heights and sizes below are starting points to adapt to your own design.

The Decorative Plaque Workflow

Phase 1: Base Shape (Create Shape)

  1. Draw the plaque outline (rectangle, oval or an irregular shape)
  2. Use Create Shape with a Round or Smooth profile for a gentle dome for the background
  3. Set the height to roughly a quarter to a third of the material thickness as a starting point
  4. This makes the raised center field

Phase 2: Border Molding (Two Rail Sweep)

  1. Offset the plaque outline inward (for example 0.5 to 1 inch) to make the inner rail
  2. Run Two Rail Sweep with the outer outline and the inner offset as the two rails
  3. Use an ogee, cove or simple round molding as the cross-section
  4. Tick Fill center of inner closed vector rails to fill the interior, or use the Merge combine mode with the dome from Phase 1
  5. This adds a decorative border around the center dome

Phase 3: Decorative Element (Import or Create)

Option A: import clipart (V3M or 3DCLIP) and place it on the center dome with the Merge combine mode

Option B: sculpt a custom element from a Create Shape base

Option C: use Turn and Spin to make rosettes, medallions or bosses for the corners or center

Phase 4: Background Texture (Create Texture Area)

  1. Use Create Vector Boundary From Selected Components on the central clipart element to get its outline vector
  2. Use Create Texture Area with a decorative tile from the tool's tile list
  3. Restrict the texture to the background field by selecting the background area vector
  4. Use Clear Component Inside Selected Vectors (select the texture component, then the clipart outline last) to make a hole in the texture where the main clipart sits

Phase 5: Text

  1. Add text with the Create Text tool
  2. A V-Carve toolpath can cut text directly, so most text needs no 3D modeling
  3. Or use Create Shape on the text vectors with a small Flat profile to make raised 3D letters

Phase 6: Global Refinement

  1. Use Scale Model Height to fit everything within the material thickness, leaving proper gaps
  2. Use Smooth Components on any imported clipart to remove faceting
  3. Use Sculpting to blend visible seams between components
  4. Review the 3D view with a material applied to check the overall look

Phase 7: Toolpath Preparation

  1. Use Create Vector Boundary From Selected Components on all visible components to make the 3D machining boundary
  2. Set up a 3D Roughing toolpath using the boundary
  3. Set up a 3D Finishing toolpath using the boundary
  4. Preview and verify before saving

Key Rules for Combining Several Modeling Tools

Combine mode matters. Components combine with what is BELOW them in the Component Tree, so the wrong combine mode gives unexpected results. A typical setup:

  • Background dome: Add (lowest in the tree)
  • Border molding: Merge (appears over the dome where they overlap)
  • Texture background: Merge or Add
  • Clipart or main element: Merge
  • Raised letters: Add or Merge

Scale after modeling, not during. Build the components at their natural height, then use Scale Model Height at the end to fit everything into the material thickness.

Create the vector boundary last. Make the boundary vector AFTER all the modeling is done, so it reflects the final composite and not an intermediate state.

Sculpt seams last. Do the sculpting to blend transitions after Create Component from Visible Model, and do not bake the originals until you are sure the structure is final.
