Where did the Undo, Redo and Save buttons go, and how do I get a panel back after it popped out or disappeared?

Why the buttons are missing

In version 12 and newer the row of file icons (new file, save, undo, redo) is hidden by default. Nothing is broken. One setting switches the row back on.

Bring the buttons back

  1. Open Edit > Options.
  2. Find the General Settings section.
  3. Set Show additional file operations to Yes. The official description: it shows an additional row of icons along the top of the Design tab for File New, File Save, Undo and Redo.
  4. Click OK. The Options dialog warns that many of its choices only take effect after the software has been closed and restarted, so restart if the row does not appear.

Put a stray panel back

  • A tab has popped out and floats on its own (Layers, Sheets): drag the tab by its name and drop it directly on top of another tab's name, such as Design. It snaps back into the standard layout.
  • A tools page only shows as a small tab at the edge of the screen: it is unpinned (auto-hidden). Hover over the tab to show it, then click the push-pin icon at the top right of the page's title area to pin it open.
  • Everything is in the wrong place for what you are doing: the software has two preset layouts, one for design and one for toolpaths. The Switch Layout buttons on the tool tabs swap between them, and so do the F11 and F12 keys.

Pro tips

  • In the Options dialog, the Window Layout section has Save Tab Layout, which saves the layout and pinned state of the tabs between sessions. If your arrangement keeps resetting, check that setting.
  • The same General Settings section holds Recent Font List Size and Recent File List Size, handy if those lists feel too short.
  • For a tour of every menu, see the entry on where everything is in the menus.
