Why did it carve everything except a couple of letters?

Updated Oct 13, 20262 min readVCarve Pro & Aspire

Why this happens

When specific letters are skipped while the rest carves fine, those glyphs have bad outlines:

  1. Open or self-intersecting character outlines. Some fonts convert to curves with tiny defects (unclosed paths, crossing segments) on particular characters. The toolpath silently skips regions it cannot resolve.
  2. The letters sit on an unselected layer or in a group that was not included when the toolpath was calculated.
  3. Single-line font glyphs. They are open by design, so region-based toolpaths (V-Carve, Pocket) cannot use them.

The fix

  1. Convert the text to curves (if not already), then run the Vector Validator (Drawing tab). It finds overlaps, intersections and zero-length spans on the exact problem glyphs.
  2. Use Edit > Selection > Select All Open Vectors, then Join Open Vectors; node-edit any self-crossings the Validator flags.
  3. Re-select all target vectors (watch for groups and layers) and recalculate. Confirm every letter appears in the Toolpath Preview before cutting.
  4. Single-line fonts: use a Profile-On toolpath with a set depth instead of V-Carve.

Pro tips

  • Test-preview is the cheap insurance: a letter missing in Preview will be missing in wood. Never skip the preview scan on text-heavy work.
  • If one font repeatedly produces bad glyphs, swap fonts. Some free fonts have chronically dirty outlines.
