Why won't my .crv file open, 'created in a newer version'? (File version compatibility)

Updated Oct 13, 20262 min readVCarve Pro & Aspire

Why this happens

The software's project files are generally not backward compatible. A file saved in V12 cannot be opened in V11.5 or earlier, and there is no export-to-older-version option. The official FAQ gives a current example inside version 12: files saved in build 12.508 or later will not open in 12.507 or earlier, because the file format changed. And the trap: opening an old file in a new version and saving it permanently upgrades the file, so the old version can't read it anymore.

Also remember the app boundary: VCarve Pro saves .crv files and Aspire saves .crv3d files. A .crv3d file is only compatible with Aspire, while Aspire can open .crv files from VCarve Pro.

What you can do

  1. Keep copies before opening anything in a new version. Archive the originals when you upgrade.
  2. To share work with someone on an older version:
  • Export the vectors as DXF or EPS (universally readable)
  • Export 3D components as STL (they can re-import)
  • Save toolpath settings as toolpath templates and share those
  • The receiving side rebuilds the job: tedious but complete.
  1. For ongoing collaboration, update all computers to the same version and the same build (for example 12.511). That is the safe path.

Pro tips

  • Minor updates within a major version (12.0 to 12.5) are always free, so there is no cost to getting every computer onto the same build. The newest build is 12.511.
  • If a customer sends a file you can't open, ask which product AND version made it before troubleshooting anything else.
