After upgrading, my downloaded gadgets are gone or throw errors. Which library gadgets have a version 12 download, and what replaces the ones that don't?

Why it happens

Two facts from the official pages explain most of it:

• The Migration Dialog that runs after an upgrade lists what it copies: the tool database and machines, your custom post-processors, options, custom material textures and sculpting presets. Downloaded gadgets are not on that list.
• The gadget library publishes each gadget per software version. Builds for versions 4 to 8.5 are .exe installers. Builds for version 9 and later are .vgadget files. Not every gadget has been published for every version.

So after an upgrade, plan to download the build that matches your new version and install it again.

Fix

1. Open the official gadget library and choose your version.
2. Download each gadget you use and install it with Gadgets > Install New Gadget.
3. Restart and check the Gadgets menu.
4. If a gadget stops with a message, read it. The manual says gadgets report which requirement was not met, such as needing selected vectors or an open job.

Not listed for 12, with the built-in route where the manual documents one:

Pro tips

• The gadgets that ship with the program (Keyhole, Drag Knife, Celtic Weave, Setup Sheet Editor and the Wrapping group) install with each version, so only downloaded gadgets need this attention.
• Do not run an old .exe gadget installer against a current version. Use the .vgadget build for your version.
• Listings change. If a gadget you need is missing for your version, check the library again before assuming it is retired.
