How do I lay out evenly spaced flutes across a flat panel? (Fluter Gadget)
Updated Oct 13, 20262 min readVCarve Pro & Aspire
What it is
The Fluter Gadget draws the vectors for a fluted flat panel from a handful of dimensions. You tell it the panel size and how many flutes you want, and it places the flute vectors for you. It only draws. The library page is clear that you then use those vectors to build the toolpath yourself.
Do not confuse it with the preinstalled Wrapped Fluting Layout gadget, which spaces flutes around a rotary blank. The Fluter Gadget is for flat work such as pilasters, door stiles and mantel legs.
Steps
- Download the version 12 build from the gadget library and install it with Gadgets > Install New Gadget.
- Open a job sized for your material.
- Choose Gadgets > Fluter.
- Fill in the form:
- Anchor Point: where on the job the layout is created.
- Length & Width: the size of the panel.
- Number of Flutes: how many flutes run across the panel.
- Start & End: where the flutes begin and stop. The library words it as how far into the material to start and end the flute, so check the result in the 2D View.
- Flute Width: the width of each flute.
- Click OK. The vectors are added to the job.
- Select the new vectors and create the cut. The Fluting Toolpath is the usual choice because it ramps the tool in and out along each line.
Limits and judgment
- The gadget produces vectors only, with no tool, depth or ramp choices. All of that is decided in the toolpath.
- Flute Width describes the layout. The real groove width on the wood depends on the bit and the depth you cut, so check the preview against the spacing before cutting.
- The layout is straight and evenly spaced. For flutes that follow a curve or fan out, draw them by hand or with the copy tools.
Pro tips
- Set Start & End so the flutes stop short of any rail, plinth block or cap that will cover the ends.
- Test one flute on scrap to confirm the groove width before running the whole panel.
- See the entry on the Fluting Toolpath for ramp types and depth settings.
